I was 12. I stopped reading the Times because of the Political Section.
Expert diplomats, academics, and pols were weighing on issues in a language that was foreign to me. It was neutral, as if these people thought they were doing science. I sniffed fraud.
I became aware of a mystery. One Times theater critic, writing his review of the opening night of a Broadway play, would decide the fate of the production. A horrific judgment…and BANG. The play would close.
That seemed odd. How had this come to pass? Through what agreement?
