That's an amazing insight. The hydrogen utopia, though, sounds a bit like some "Tesla free energy" talk, does Jon believe electrical engineers are like virologists or psychiatrists?

Yep, the hydrogen utopia is fantasy. Few seem to understand that hydrogen isn't an energy source, because it requires more energy to make it and store it than you get from burning it. It's an energy carrier, just like a battery. It makes about as much sense as ethanol, which also consumes more energy than we get from burning it.

Jon seems to be on the negative side of the solar PV debate, which like hydrogen seems to be understood by almost no one. We've become a culture of extremists. Either solar is the panacea and can totally replace petroleum tomorrow, or it's all fraud and useless. The entire 'debate' is devoid of reason.

But, I think Jon's point was just that there's alternatives, if we really wanted alternatives. And I agree totally.
