The US government has finally got its hands on an egregious criminal.

After years spent in isolation at Ecuador’s embassy in London and in a British prison, Bob Woodward will be shipped to America to stand trial. His crime? Breaching national security and exposing secrets of the Nixon administration.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced, “Make no mistake about it, Woodward is not a journalist relying on sources to tell a story about corruption. He is posing as a journalist. In fact, he’s a traitor who stopped the essential work of a Presidential administration dead in its tracks and placed this nation is extreme danger.”

Woodward will be prosecuted under the viciously narrow 1917 Espionage Act. According to that law, any leaking of classified information is automatically a crime, and the defendant is barred from arguing the leaked information itself proved acts of corruption were committed by government entities. Obviously, Woodward will be found guilty.

When reached for comment, journalist Julian Assange, speaking from his home in Washington DC, resting between book tours, stated: “I’m not familiar with the details of Woodward’s case. However, it’s clear he crossed the clear boundary between journalism and espionage. Every reporter learns, early on, how to make that distinction.”

When asked whether he would voice any support for Woodward, Assange said, “Look, if the man made a mistake, if his intention was honorable but misinformed, well, he should have some wiggle room, I suppose. But these are issues for his trial and the jury. The justice system will prevail. From a personal point of view, I don’t understand how a man like Woodward could sacrifice his potential career and the rewards it brings, for some ‘cause’ that exposes the government to ridicule and shame. I mean, he had to know he wasn’t doing journalism, he was doing insurrection. And for what?”

Woodward’s long-time colleague, reporter Carl Bernstein, told the New York Times, “In the old days, I was smoking so much weed I didn’t remember much from day to day. I’ve already told federal investigators that the stories about Watergate and Nixon---the espionage---were all Woodward’s idea. I had nothing to do with it. The Washington Post published those articles because their lawyers said they were clean stories, which of course was a false calculation. The Post is entirely innocent. The paper was bamboozled by attorneys who didn’t know their asses from their elbows. I wish Woodward good luck, but you know, the chickens eventually come home to roost.”

Sources report that Mr. Assange was asked to contribute to Woodward’s defense fund and flatly refused. “Even if I wanted to, which I don’t,” Assange said, “right now my accountants are working on my taxes, and everything [my money] is in limbo.”
