Most civilians probably think that all military veterans are eligible for all veterans benefits. There are some benefits(VA home loans, burial in a national cemetery) that only require a DD214. Things like medical benefits at a VA medical facility require the veteran be disabled.
I don’t know what the percentage of LGBTQ service members is, but if we use the civilian population as a base, only about 1% is trans. If we apply this to the military that would mean that around 14,000 trans service members. I don’t know how long the military has been recruiting transgender people, but it would take at least 10 years to get to 163,000.
As previously mentioned, only disabled veterans are eligible for VA medical benefits, so whether so designated or not, providing medical benefits to transgender veterans is treating them as if they were disabled. So, wrap your head around this; the military is essentially recruiting disabled people when they recruit transgenders. How does that make for a robust fighting force?
