Having lived under communism I understand this concept of interpreting everything "upsidedown." Chinese writer, Wu Zuxiang, explains it very well, which I quote in Gods of Tech and Pestilence: "If a newspaper says ‘the Party has made great strides against corruption in Henan,’ then you know that corruption has recently been especially bad in Henan. If you read about the heroic rescue of eight miners somewhere, you can guess that a mine collapse might have killed hundreds who aren’t mentioned. Read upside-down, there is a sense in which the official press never lies. It cannot lie. It has to tell you what the party wants you to believe, and if you can figure out the party’s motive—which always exists—then you have a sense of the truth."

Sobering article on the depravity of our governments and military industrial complex. But very hard to argue Jon’s valid points. Defense stocks are right up there behind pharmaceuticals on the profitability to investors barometer ….. I think I’m gonna get sick….

That's an amazing insight. The hydrogen utopia, though, sounds a bit like some "Tesla free energy" talk, does Jon believe electrical engineers are like virologists or psychiatrists?

Yep, the hydrogen utopia is fantasy. Few seem to understand that hydrogen isn't an energy source, because it requires more energy to make it and store it than you get from burning it. It's an energy carrier, just like a battery. It makes about as much sense as ethanol, which also consumes more energy than we get from burning it.

Jon seems to be on the negative side of the solar PV debate, which like hydrogen seems to be understood by almost no one. We've become a culture of extremists. Either solar is the panacea and can totally replace petroleum tomorrow, or it's all fraud and useless. The entire 'debate' is devoid of reason.

But, I think Jon's point was just that there's alternatives, if we really wanted alternatives. And I agree totally.

Great article.
